3TREES Floor Coating Systems (Part A)

There are four types of floor coating in 3TREES,epoxy floor coating, polyurethane floor coating, inorganic floor coating and functional floor coating.

Today we will introduce the first two flooring systems: epoxy floor coating system and polyurethane floor coating system.
1. The Epoxy Floor Coating System
The epoxy floor coating system is currently the most mature system in the flooring industry, and manufacturers of both sizes generally have finished products.
Advantages of epoxy floor coating:

  • 1.High hardness
  • 2.High compressive strength
  • 3.Strong adhesion
  • 4.Excellent chemical resistance
  • 5.Mature construction methods

Disadvantages of epoxy floor coating::

  • 1. Poor weather resistance
  • 2. Average heat resistance and toughness

Because it is very hard, most current manufacturers' epoxy products are relatively brittle. Compared with polyurethane, epoxy has a worse ability to resist concrete cracks. Therefore, if epoxy is used outdoors, a weather-resistant topcoat must be added.
Generally, the epoxy floor system covers several sub-systems, including: the epoxy mortar floor system, the textured anti-slip floor system and the epoxy self-leveling floor system, which can meet the needs of high, medium and low-end indoor floors.
1. Epoxy (flat coating) floor system is characterized by easy construction, relatively low cost, smooth and easy to clean, and the most cost-effective. It is often used in indoor places with weak ultraviolet rays, especially in areas with low load capacity and high smoothness requirements, such as: non-heavy-load industrial plants, offices, indoor parking lots, warehouses, etc.
2. The surface of the epoxy textured anti-skid floor system generally has an orange pattern effect. It is characterized by good anti-skid performance, pressure resistance and wear resistance. It is suitable for garage scenes with anti-skid and heavy load requirements, such as garage driveways.
3.The epoxy self-leveling floor system is characterized by high cleanliness, smoothness and beauty, and can achieve a mirror effect. It is suitable for garage scenes that require decorative effects, such as commercial buildings and high-end residential parking spaces; it is also suitable for areas that require dust-free and sterile conditions, such as the pharmaceutical industry that implements GMP standards, or schools, hospitals, office buildings, etc.
2. The Polyurethane Floor Coating System
The polyurethane floor coating system has relatively good flexibility and can effectively cover micro-cracks in concrete caused by temperature differences. At the same time, it has excellent UV resistance and focuses on ultra-long weather-resistant application scenarios to extend the service life of the floor system. It is often used in places with high weather resistance, impact resistance and large temperature differences, such as outdoor parking lots, sports fields, anti-slip ramps, etc.
Advantages of polyurethane floor coating:

  • Good flexibility

  • Good UV resistance

  • Good acid resistance

  • Can be cured at low temperatures

  • Adjustable hardness

Disadvantages of polyurethane floor coating:

  • High cost

  • Construction is difficult

Polyurethane floor materials have good acid resistance due to their special chemical structure. At the same time, it can be cured at low temperature. Epoxy materials generally cure very slowly below 5 degrees, while the fixing cycle of polyurethane materials is only half that of epoxy under the same conditions. In the northern winter, the application of polyurethane floor system will shorten the entire construction period. In addition, unlike epoxy materials, the hardness of polyurethane materials is adjustable. Because of these characteristics, polyurethane materials, including higher-end polyurea materials, are currently a hot topic in the industry.
Generally speaking, compared with epoxy floor systems, the application of polyurethane floor systems is not as popular as the former, so the price of raw materials is relatively higher. In addition, the construction of polyurethane floor systems is more difficult because of its shorter curing cycle and shorter operating time after mixing, so it requires higher organization of the entire construction. Especially in outdoor construction, there are more uncontrollable factors, so the construction cost of the polyurethane floor system is relatively higher.
Polyurethane flooring systems cover various types of systems, including:
1. Solvent-based polyurethane thin coating system
This is a relatively economical polyurethane flooring system that can be used outdoors. It has the advantages of good adhesion and UV resistance. This topcoat is the same acrylic polyurethane system used in car paint and aircraft skin paint, and has very good weather resistance.
Solvent-based polyurethane systems are often used for floors that require strong durability when exposed to outdoor sunlight, such as various outdoor courts, stadium stands, outdoor parking lots, etc.
2. Solvent-free polyurethane self-leveling system
Compared to epoxy self-leveling, solvent-free polyurethane self-leveling systems can also achieve a good gloss. In addition, its flexibility and elongation can ensure that the system has better impact resistance. At the same time, its hardness is adjustable. Generally speaking, solvent-free polyurethane self-leveling systems are suitable for industries that require resistance to heavy pressure, impact resistance, and chemical corrosion, such as machinery, chemicals, food, pharmaceutical industries, etc., and can also be used in hospitals, schools, offices, etc.
3. Super wear-resistant polyurethane system
The topcoat of the super wear-resistant polyurethane system not only has good weather resistance, but also has the best wear resistance among floor products and can resist ultraviolet rays. It is suitable for places requiring weather resistance, wear resistance, and light anti-skid, such as various outdoor courts, stadium stands, outdoor parking lots, etc. If the intermediate coating is combined with a solvent-free polyurethane system, it can even be used in more areas such as roofing.
4. Water-based super wear-resistant polyurethane system
It is made of water-based materials from bottom to surface, has no smell during on-site construction, and has a soft luster. Many homeowners also prefer this muted color palette. Water-based super wear-resistant polyurethane systems are suitable for light-load commercial locations, such as schools, hospital office buildings, sports venues, etc. Relatively speaking, the budget for these occasions is also more sufficient.
The above is the introduction to the epoxy floor coating system and the polyurethane floor coating system. In the next article, we will introduce the other two floor coating systems of 3TREES: the inorganic floor coating system and the functional floor coating system.
